Miracle Fruit
What is miracle fruit?
Miracle fruit, also known as Synsepalum dulcificum, miracle berry, wonder fruit and magic fruit, is a fruit that grows in West Africa. It has been known about and used since the 18th century, but it is more available nowadays, because its extracts are imported into the US and Europe.
What is so special about this fruit?
It is an exotic fruit, which, when eaten, changes sour tastes to sweet in the human mouth. For example, after consuming it, lemon juice will taste like sweet lemonade. This effect is caused by miraculin, a substance contained in miracle fruit. Miraculin itself is not sweet, but after human taste buds are exposed to it, sour food, such as citrus, is perceived as sweet. This wonder fruit does not only change the taste of sour food but almost any type of food. What you eat after using it is up to your imagination.
The effect of miraculin lasts from 15 minutes to 2 hours (depending on the type of consumed food). After that period of time, human tastes return to normal (lemon tastes sour, grapefruit tastes bitter…).
Where can I purchase this miracle fruit?
The actual fruit is grown only in West Africa and is not available on the US and European markets. You can, however, purchase so-called pocket miracle berries, named Miracle Frooties. They contain extracts from wonder fruit berries and are freeze dried moments after being picked to produce powdered Miracle Berries with the same effect as fresh berries. For easier usage, the powder is then compressed into tablets called Frooties. The tablets are packaged in sealed blister packs of 10 and then further placed in sealed plastic/metallic packaging. They contain no artificial additives (such as colorants, acids or preservatives).
